One of the most important things you will do when you get your new Tibetan Spaniel puppy is put them into some obedience training. This training will teach them how to behave in different situations and help them to be more confident. However, it may be you haven’t got the time to take your puppy off to obedience training classes so you may decide to do it all yourself.

Here is a brief run through of the things you will need to do:

Obedience Training

The Benefits of Tibetan Spaniel Obedience Training

As a Tibetan Spaniel. I can learn quickly how to respond to specific, well delivered commands. However, this also means you must learn how to give those commands. We have to work in partnership on any obedience training to be truly effective and long lasting.

Here are some examples.

Leadership – Be in charge at all times and assert your dominance as pack leader, so that I will want to listen to you and follow you. Any weakness and I will feel obliged to take charge myself!

Alpha leadership is all about being the pack leader and is the cornerstone of all good training.

Basic Commands – Sit, stay, heel, speak, and quiet –are the basics that will make your tibbie more respondent when it really matters. These four behaviours will form the foundation of everything you need to teach them more tricks later.

No Biting or Barking – Two of the biggest problems that a Tibetan Spaniel can have are biting and barking. Deal with them early on and we will behave for you.

Walking –Again be in charge during our walks, teach me how to sit and heel and ignore other dogs and reward my good behaviour and I will remember it well.

Tibetan Spaniel obedience training is important in many ways because it provides the foundation for all the issues that might arise at home. If your tibbie is under a year old or simply does not behave properly, consider a class to help you get started.

Many things can cause aggressive behaviour in my breed of Tibetan Spaniels. It might be due to a dominance related issue between you and me, or it might be a trigger that was never properly dealt with from my puppy days – such as an attack by another tibetan spaniel. Whatever is causing this aggression it must be addressed quickly.

Where does this aggressive behaviour comes from?

Tibetan spaniel aggression can start as young as 6 weeks of age, a crucial age when a puppy should be mixing with other dogs and given the necessary training that keeps them from biting other people. This time of meeting new doggy friends should last until we turns 14 weeks of age and can be even longer depending how we do.

One thing to remember is to never take a Tibetan Spaniel puppy away from its litter before 8 weeks of age. Never use harsh discipline with the puppy between 8 and 10 weeks and make sure the tibetan spaniel is very gently treated in that time. Hitting, yelling or other harsh punishments at a young age can breed aggressive behaviour in tibetan spaniels over time.

Actual aggression can be triggered by any number of factors. Heredity and genetics are certainly factors – some breeds can be more aggressive than others – but it is by no means a hard fast rule. Additionally, tibetan spaniels that have not been neutered or spayed can be more prone to aggressive tendencies.

The most important factor in creating aggressive behaviour in tibetan spaniels is their environment. A tibetan spaniel that has poor living conditions, harsh masters, no mixing with other dogs and people, or that has been frightened or attacked by another dog is far more likely to be aggressive as it ages.

Stopping and Controlling Aggressive Behaviour in Tibetan Spaniels

Tibetan Spaniel Aggression can grow from the need to establish a pack pecking order. Biting, posturing, and other aggressive tendencies are often the result of a tibetan spaniel testing for dominance. You’ll need to establish your dominance as a pack leader and maintain that position.

Make sure you train your tibetan spaniel to respond to your commands, control feeding and walking times, and make sure you are the strong leader in the house. If you defer to the tibetan spaniel or allow it to take liberties in your home, it will exhibit stronger aggression toward others.

If your tibetan spaniel is defensive-aggressive, they may strike out at a person in fear. The reason for this is that they have not been properly socialised. So keep them away from small children and attend a training session to help your tibbie to change their behaviour.

Generally we keep quite fit and healthy. But when it comes to my health as a Tibetan Spaniel puppy, there are many potential ailments that can catch me off guard. Ailments can be emotionally devastating and of course expensive for you if they are not dealt with quickly and effectively. Instead of responding to potential health problems as they arrive, learn what you can do to avoid them in the first place and keep me happy and healthy.

My Potential Health Problems

Just like humans we can, as Tibetan Spaniel Puppies, suffer from any number of health issues. The difference is that we cannot tell you “I have a stomach ache”. We will often suffer in silence until there is a very real pain that needs to be treated. So, it’s important to recognise the symptoms and the actions you can take to avoid these issues in the first place.

Infections –Tibetan Spaniel puppies can suffer from a number of potential infections, in their ears, on their skin, in their eyes and their teeth. Ear infections are the most common and are often due to a foreign body or bacteria getting in there. So please check my ears frequently for red spots, swelling, excess moisture, or dirt. Of all our health problems, infections are the easiest to prevent. Clean my eyes, brush my teeth and hair regularly to avoid any potential bacteria build up.

Allergies – As a Tibetan Spaniel Puppy, we can have many forms of allergies. By far the most common is a flea allergy that can cause hot spots and lead to infections. The best thing is to get flea medication for me every month and have a vet examine me regularly to ensure I am keeping nice and healthy. A Tibetan Spaniel Puppy’s health can be affected by a skin problem which can lead to a nasty ear infection or some other hot spot. On occasions it may be a result of a food allergy – a more severe issue that should be addressed by my vet. Look out for watery eyes and scratching – if you see me doing this, please check my eyes and skin for possible infections.

Diabetes – Our health problems tend to mirror human issues in many ways and diabetes is one such potential disease. Excess rich, fatty and sugary foods can result in pancreatic issues that cause diabetes. To avoid diabetes, keep me on a strict diet of puppy foods with minimal table scraps or excess meals. If I am diagnosed with diabetes, you’ll need to take me to see a vet regularly.

Obesity – Eating too much and lack of any exercise can shorten my life span so I would prefer a healthy diet of puppy food and regular exercise. I like snacks as any other puppy does, so watch what I get to eat and this will keep me nice and fit.

So please ensure that I eat well each day, have some exercise and that you keep me clean and well groomed, then many of these Tibetan Spaniel puppy health problems will never be an issue.

For more detailed information about me, please sign up to my newsletter and I will tell you lots more about Tibetan Spaniels.

Remember I am like a child, as a puppy I want to explore everything and test everything out. So in the early days you will need to watch me and help me to understand how to do things!

Please check your home and garden for any potential hazards, if there are any I will be sure to find them. In the house keep any small toys, rubber bands, pen tops or treasures I could swallow well out of reach, so I cannot chew them and choke.

I do love chewing as Tibetan spaniel puppy, I can think of nothing better than to find a good piece of electrical wire, garden wire in my mouth and chew it. Not good if I want to live a while! The best thing is to buy me a great doggy toy or ball that you are happy for me to chew to my little hearts content. If you spray cords or things you don’t want me to chew, with some nasty doggy repellent, I will avoid them believe me – unless of course I like the taste!

It is best not to leave anything near me that smells interesting, like a rubbish bin, I like to explore and maybe find something nice to nibble. I am quite good at learning how to get into cupboards too – just so you know. I do watch you, so if there is something in one of your cupboards that intrigues me – I may try to get in too. Sometimes I get a shock of course and find nasty cleaners in there.

I love to play and one great thing I found was a toilet roll – that was fun! I pulled and pulled and it followed me all the way downstairs and under the chairs – it lasted a while before I got bored and then chewed it up instead. I did make a real mess, so best to keep these away from your Tibetan spaniel puppy as well.

As a Tibetan Spaniel I love to explore the garden, so I will check your fences, your gate if you have one and of course your flowers and vegetable patch. So please make sure there are no poisonous plants to send me to heaven early. Sometimes I may find an area to have a good old dig and may find an escape route – not that I want to leave you, but if it looks like an adventure – then I just have to take a look. So best to keep an eye on your garden security!

I will need to learn some house training, so I understand what I need to do and where – it all seems strange at first as a Tibetan puppy and I do get excited at times too. Also keep me up to date with checkups with my doctor – the vet, to keep any nasties from me.

As a puppy I will bring you lots of love and happiness. I am always pleased to see you and love a cuddle. Just keep me safe and teach me what is what and we will be great friends for years.

Introduction to your Tibetan Spaniel

Woof – I am a Tibetan Spaniel and I see myself as a happy, charming, sociable dog with bags of energy and personality. I also love my creature comforts, so do provide me with somewhere nice to snuggle and some toys to play with please!

I am a great family pet and companion and love to be around a loving family. I am happy to be with an experienced and a non- experienced dog owner as I have a good natured disposition and a playful attitude.

My name is Tamsin

Just so you know I can be stubborn and independent, which can make training something of a challenge for you at times but I am quick to learn and very smart. I am not overly demanding in terms of exercise but like to have regular walks and to be able to enjoy a safe and secure place where I can play when not on a leash.

I get to know you as my owner quite quickly and tend to be in tune with your emotions as I enjoy interaction and do not like to be left alone or neglected.

Get me out and about as soon as you can so I can meet other dogs and people as this will help my confidence and stability in my temperament. I can sometimes be wary around strangers and I will bark and raise the alarm if I am worried about someone or something that is going on.

I love children but I do not like to be roughly handled, so please handle me gently and carefully as you would your prized possessions. I do like other pets too, so happy to be amongst other friends of your family.

Here on this site you will find lots of information about Tibetan Spaniels on grooming our coat, our history, how best to train me, details about my appearance. Also, some information about me as a Tibetan Puppy.

If you would like to find out lots more about me, please sign up to my FREE newsletter and I will let you into more secrets about me and what things may help you as you enjoy your Tibetan Spaniel.

I am relatively low maintenance in terms of grooming, but I like it if you brush my coat twice a week using a mist of water prior to brushing.

I will need brushing more regularly during periods of heavy shedding. You should trim the hair around my bottom for hygiene reasons, and make sure that my ears are clean and dry to reduce any chances of infection.

Please pay special attention to the hair behind my ears as it can really knot easily – so untangling it would be great!

When I need a bath, please use a mild shampoo and ensure you rinse it all off me too otherwise it can make my skin really dry and itchy.

As a Tibetan Spaniel I originated in Tibet and was bred by Buddhist monks and became known as a prayer dog. The early small monastery dogs, my ancestors, were thought to be representative of the Tibetan Spaniel. They loyally followed their Lama master and became regarded as “Little Lions” owing to their similarity to the Chinese guardian lions. This gave them much value and prestige.

My breed is likely to have common ancestors with Oriental breeds such as the Pekingese and Japanese Chin.

My long, rich history dates back centuries, the Tibetan Spaniels (or ‘Tibbies’ as we are known) served as a watchdog as well as a companion. Sitting in Tibetan Monasteries on the high walls and barking at any sign of intruders. Just down my street!

The village-bred Tibetan Spaniels used to vary greatly in size and type, and the smaller puppies were usually given as gifts to the monasteries. In turn, these smaller dogs were used in the monastery breeding programs and were probably combined with the more elegant Tibetan Spaniel-type dogs brought from China. Those bred closer to the Chinese borders were characterised by shorter muzzles.

So we were being bred in the United Kingdom by the 1890s. The first authenticated reference we find to Tibetan Spaniels in the United States is a litter born out of two imported dogs from a Tibetan monastery in 1965.

In January 1971, the Tibetan Spaniel Club of America was formed with 14 charter members. After a period in the miscellaneous classes, we as, Tibetan Spaniels were accepted for AKC registration and became eligible to compete as a Non-Sporting breed effective January 1, 1984.

As a Tibetan Spaniel, I am a small dog with a very dainty appearance. I carry myself with a certain regal dignity, and have a pretty distinguished face.

I have a beautiful, silky coat, which is medium in length, and feathering of the backs of my legs and ears. My small, silky ears frame my face beautifully, and I am finished off with a luxuriously plumed and feathered tail.

My coat can come in a myriad of colours, including red, fawn, white, black, cream, and gold. I generally weigh around 9-15 pounds, and I stand tall at around 10 inches.
